Humans are wired to learn to speak. We are NOT wired to learn to read, we have to build the neural pathways.

We know that connections need to be formed linking up the written symbols with the speech processing areas of the brain.

To learn to read, our brain must crack the written code that is used to represent the spoken language.

In a dyslexic brain or a struggling readers brain, the visual form area is not linked up with the speech sound area (frontal lobe). This A3 poster is a very simplified version of how the dyslexic brain reading circuits link up in the brain.

The most effective way to develop the connection is by carefully and directly teaching learners how the written symbols relate to the spoken language. Strategies are required until the word is mapped to long-term memory.
