Did you know this remarkable story comes from one of our very own Learning MATTERS team members? Our talented Programme Coordinator humbly shared this incredible project she and her husband, Bevan, have brought to life.
Niki’s husband Bevan’s uncle, Gregory Saunders, suffered a stroke in 2023, which left him unable to continue his passion for doodling and sketching. While clearing Gregory’s home, they discovered a treasure trove of his beautiful sketches and doodles. Inspired to honour Gregory’s talent, Niki and Bevan decided to bring these drawings to life by adding colour and crafting a heartfelt children’s story, Gregory the Kiwi. This book has now been published as a tribute to Gregory’s art, ensuring his creativity lives on and can be shared with many.
In a generous gesture, $2 from each book sold are donated to the Stroke Foundation NZ.
About Gregory Saunders
Gregory Saunders was born and raised in Te Kuiti, New Zealand. A gifted freehand artist, his work often depicted life and activities in and around the King Country region. After suffering a stroke in 2023, Gregory now resides in a care facility.
With Gregory’s blessing, his nephew Bevan and Bevan’s wife, Niki, transformed his sketches into Gregory the Kiwi, a children’s book created to honour Gregory and share his art with the world.
